Otsego County Safe Kids to Showcase Halloween Program

Safe Kids of Otsego County will offer Halloween and pedestrian safety materials to assist in keeping kids safe during the popular Trick or Treat event. Reflective Halloween bags, along with reflective stickers will be available at the Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard Saturday, October 24th from 10:00 until 4:00. The bags and reflectors are designed to help kids and adults avoid traffic dangers and to stay safe during the busy evening holiday. According to Rich McCaffery, a Community Educator with Bassett Healthcare and Co-coordinator of Safe Kids, everyone in the community should be sensitive to the need for keeping kids safe around traffic.
A promotional display reading Be Safe, Be Seen this Halloween! along with the bags and reflectors will be available at the Mill. A suggested 50-cent donation for the reflective bags, stickers and accompanying hand-outs benefit all Safe Kids initiatives.

Safe Kids Worldwide is the first and only international non-profit organization dedicated solely to preventing unintentional childhood injury. Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, the lead agency for Safe Kids in Otsego County, has always been dedicated to programs promoting healthy kids and healthy communities. Fly Creek Cider Mill hosts National Kidney Foundation of Northeast New York

This Sunday, October 19, the National Kidney Foundation of Northeast New York will conduct free Diabetes and Hypertension Screening at the Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard in Fly Creek, NY. The screening offered from 11:00 until 3:00 is open to all visitors. “This event will provide a great service to the Cooperstown and regional community and will integrate nicely with the activities and facilities that the Mill provides,” said Rebecca Conklin of the National Kidney Foundation. Along with the screening the Mill will be performing cider-making demonstrations on its 1889 water-powered cider press and will offer over 40 samples of their famous foods including cave-aged cheddar cheese and sweet, butter-cream fudge. Sunday will also feature a performance by lyricist and impressionist, Ody B. Goldy, who will entertain visitors with his humorous tributes to well-known performers. Name the song and writer and win some fresh cider. The screening and parking are free. Registration is not required.

Part 1 (Stock)
Peels and cores from apples
Clean skins from onions and garlic
2 sticks Cinnamon
2 ½ c. Fly Creek Cider Mill cider
2 ½ c. Water

Combine apple peels and cores from apples, skins from onions and garlic, cinnamon, apple juice and water in a kettle. Boil gently, partially covered, about 45 minutes. Remove from heat, let stand one hour. Strain and discard solids.

Part 2 (Soup)
3 T. Butter
½ tsp. Grated ginger root
2 cloves Minced garlic
1 ½ c. Chopped onion
1 tsp. Salt
1 Juice from 1 lemon
2 c. Yogurt
2 c. Sour cream
4 c. Peeled, chopped apples (any kind but Red Delicious)

Part 3 (Spices)
3 T. Flour
1 tsp. Dry Mustard
1 tsp. Turmeric
1 tsp. Ground cumin
1 tsp. Ground coriander
¼ tsp. Ground cloves
¼ tsp. Cayenne pepper

Mix flour, dry mustard, turmeric, cumin, coriander, cloves and cayenne pepper. Set aside.

Part 4 (Topping)
Slivered, toasted almonds

Yogurt and sour cream should be at room temperature. Heat a heavy skillet. Add butter, ginger, garlic and a dash of salt. Stir and cook over moderate heat a minute or so, then add onions. Saute another 5 minutes, then add salt and apples, stirring well. Add lemon juice and sprinkle in the pre-combined flour and spices, stirring constantly. Cover and cook 8-10 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally. Turn off the heat, and let it rest about 10 minutes. Heat the stock. Puree the stock and sauteed mixture together, bit-by-bit in a food processor or blender. Make sure the result is very smooth. Transfer it to a kettle or heavy saucepan, and whisk in the yogurt and sour cream. At this point the soup shouldn’t be cooked any further. Just heat it over low heat right before serving time. (The soup can be made a couple hours ahead and heated just before it’s served.) Serve topped with toasted almond slivers. This soup is great cold on a hot summer day.

The Daily Star published an article about Cider Mills in New York and talked to Bill at the Fly Creek Cider Mill.

From the Article: According to Bill Michaels, vice president of family-owned and -operated Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard, the mill staff began pressing apples on Labor Day weekend and will continue to make cider through Thanksgiving. “We produce over 20,000 gallons of cider annually,” Michaels said. “We freeze 5,000 gallons to sample and sell to our spring summer and December visitors as well as our online store, year-round customers.”

Fly Creek Cider Mill, located just a few minutes from Cooperstown, and in its 152nd year, is one of the area’s largest cider producers and a premiere tourist destination. It was purchased by Charles and Barbara Michaels in 1962 and was sold to son Bill and his wife, Brenda Palmer-Michaels, in 1999. Since retaining ownership, the younger Michaelses have added many features including gourmet food, a bakery and even a winery. As a licensed New York State Winery, the mill has developed hard ciders and apple wines. “We are offering these winery beverages as a return to the cider making traditions of the past here at the mill,” Michaels said.
