New York native, Steve Flesch, who is ranked only 71st this year, plans to win the championship at the Turning Stone Atunyote. The Indian Nation published a news release claiming, while smiling, that the course is “Lucky.” Well, at 71st, it certainly will prove lucky for this New York native since he won over a million dollars, his career best. Atunyote can’t be lucky for everybody, so maybe it will prove lucky for New Yorkers, or who knows. The upcoming event has a six million dollar purse. A lot of money at stake and it happens right here in the Central New York area. I don’t think anybody can argue that this is great for New York, especially Upstate New York. Watch Steve Flesch Video From WKTV – VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) – With less than a day until the Turning Stone Resort Championship, the last minute details are being ironed out.

NEW YORK, Sept 30 (Reuters) – New Zealand teenager Danny Lee, who eclipsed Tiger Woods last month as the youngest U.S. amateur champion, has set his sights on victory when he makes his second PGA Tour appearance of the season this week.

The Rotorua High School senior, 18, said he wanted to impress at the $6 million Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, New York.

“I’m not just here for making the cut,” Lee told reporters on Tuesday during preparation for Thursday’s opening round. “Hopefully if I play well enough I can win this tournament. That’s my goal.”

Lee, who beat American Drew Kittleson 5&4 in the U.S. amateur final in Pinehurst, North Carolina last month, plans to turn professional after next year’s U.S. Open. View the Full Reuters Article

Local residents and are given a tour of the Atunyote golf course and facility. They got a close up look at the Championship trophy which is a replica of a statue named “Allies in War, Partners in Peace.” Allies in War is a nearly 20 feet bronze statue which depicts the alliance between the U.S.A. and the Oneida Indian Nation. The Oneida’s fought alongside the American rebels in many of the battles in the Revolutionary War. In 1777 a band of Oneidas walked over 400 miles from the Central New York area to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. They helped feed the starving soldiers and Polly Cooper, an Oneida women in the statue, taught the soldiers to cook corn beans and squash.

Oskanondonha, also known as Skenandoah, on the right of the statue, was the main negotiator for the Nation and the primary reason the Nation sided with the American rebels.

George Washington is also in the statue and he holds a two-row wampum belt and agreed that the Americans and Indians would not interfere in each others’ internal affairs after the alliance.
