Steeped in tradition and legend, wassail dates from the 1300’s when sharing a pot of holiday wassail was a community event. The word evolved from the Old English “waes hael” meaning good health. It was the custom to drink and shout again “Waes Hael!” before passing the bowl on to the next eager participant. Wassailing became a tradition as carolers carried bowls of hot wassail for good health, refilling them from neighbor’s own simmering pots of wassail.

It is this celebration of friends and holiday spirit that prompts the Fly Creek Cider Mill to feature wassail and its preparation. “Wassail is a great use of our award-winning cider for experiencing the traditions of the past during the hectic holiday season,” states Mill co-owner Brenda Michaels. Mill visitors learn how to prepare wassail several different ways with a variety of different pre-mixed spice blends. Available too, are wassail gift mixes, a good way to spread holiday cheer with friends and family.

Cider will be available every day from 9:00 – 6:00 until the Mill closes for the season December 21st. The Mill will re-open for its 153rd season on April 3rd, 2008. Click here for a complete list of holiday events and money-saving coupons visit the Fly Creek Cider Mill website.

The Daily Star published an article about Cider Mills in New York and talked to Bill at the Fly Creek Cider Mill.

From the Article: According to Bill Michaels, vice president of family-owned and -operated Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard, the mill staff began pressing apples on Labor Day weekend and will continue to make cider through Thanksgiving. “We produce over 20,000 gallons of cider annually,” Michaels said. “We freeze 5,000 gallons to sample and sell to our spring summer and December visitors as well as our online store, year-round customers.”

Fly Creek Cider Mill, located just a few minutes from Cooperstown, and in its 152nd year, is one of the area’s largest cider producers and a premiere tourist destination. It was purchased by Charles and Barbara Michaels in 1962 and was sold to son Bill and his wife, Brenda Palmer-Michaels, in 1999. Since retaining ownership, the younger Michaelses have added many features including gourmet food, a bakery and even a winery. As a licensed New York State Winery, the mill has developed hard ciders and apple wines. “We are offering these winery beverages as a return to the cider making traditions of the past here at the mill,” Michaels said. Gourmet Christmas Gift BasketsDateline Canandaigua – The fall has arrived, and with it the annual grape harvest and crush in New York’s wine country. Tons of ripe grapes of many varieties and colors are picked and delivered to wineries in all regions—Long Island, the Hudson Valley, Finger Lakes, Niagara Escarpment, Lake Erie, and Thousand Islands. There’s no better time to celebrate New York’s bounty of fine wine than October.

Throughout the month, more than 115 restaurants and 150 wine stores throughout New York State will be celebrating New York Wine Month by offering their customers hundreds of fine New York wines from over 30 wineries.

“October is the perfect month for celebrating New York wines,” said Jim Trezise, President of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation which is orchestrating the month-long promotion. “The 2007 vintage was the best in many years, and most of the wines are now available. It’s also prime time to visit wine country, combining the excitement of the harvest and crush with the beautiful fall colors.”

The promotion extends throughout the state except in New York City, where a separate “New York Wines & Dines” promotion is taking place. The major markets include Long Island, the Hudson Valley and greater Albany area, Syracuse and Utica, Rochester, Buffalo, North Country and the southern tier (Ithaca, Corning, Elmira). It seems as though Turning Stone’s Atunyote Golf Club has more than just plush greens. Ray Halbritter claims it is simply good luck to play at Turning Stone.

From “Singh, Villegas get boost from Atunyote” on Thursday, September 11, 2008 by Chris Wagner, Golf Writer for Syracuse.com, “…Six days after the exhibition, Singh won the Deutsche Bank Championship for his second straight FedEx Cup playoff victory. Weir was second and Villegas tied for third. Last week, Villegas won the BMW Championship for his first PGA Tour title.

With ties for 33rd and 60th in those two events, only Cink has failed to come through. Maybe he’s waiting to cash in his good-luck charm during next week’s Ryder Cup. Trust me, the U.S. team, loser of five of the last six Cups, could use any help it can get.” Read the Full Article
