From the Oneida Daily Dispatch: CANASTOTA — At BMR Acres, it’s all about the “alpaca lifestyle.” That is why Brian and Mary Ellen Rose, of 2542 Pine Ridge Road, now have five of them, in addition to other animals, and have opened a farm store that features alpaca-related products, including hats, gloves, scarves and other products made from alpaca fiber.

Opening the store is one small part of the business plan that the Roses created when they first purchased the 23.5 acre plot of land that they live on in Canastota, which was vacant and had been used as farmland many years before.

In time, it is the Roses’ goal to create an agri-tourism destination in Central New York for people from this area and other areas to visit for a couple of days at a time. Already, Brian said that he’d like families to feel free to bring children to visit with the animals, which include the alpacas along with one guard llama, miniature donkeys, chickens, ducks and guinea fowl. Brian said that expansions are happening little by little. View the Full Article

There are dozens of reasons why an apple a day keeps the doctor away. By: Kimberly Mickenberg

It´s hard to reconcile all the advice you get when young. “Look before you leap” contradicts “He who hesitates is lost.” But some adages, like “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” have hung around for a good reason. It turns out that six ounces of daily prevention—notably in the form of a crisp apple—do yield a pound of cure. And more.

At the core of the apple´s impact on health is its ability to prevent metabolic syndrome and the cardiovascular dysregulation that accompanies it—blood-fat disorders such as hypercholesterolemia and triglyceridemia, plaque buildup in arteries, high blood pressure, insulin resistance or glucose intolerance, and the frank risks of heart attack or stroke. Fly Creek Cider Mill’s own, Charlie Michaels, was recently recognized by the Freeman’s Journal, as an avid collector of Cider Mill Antiques as well as the President of the International Society of Apple Parer Enthusiasts. Fly Creek Cider Mill has a long-standing habit of bringing joy to the masses. Even for kids raised with all the current modern technology, joy and amazement is seen on their faces when they witness the genius of “older technology” such as an apple parer or apple slicing machine.

If only they could see the millions of nano-chips and circuits inside their iPods and flash memory, they might still be amazed at what their “stuff” does. Only when you see things work with moving parts can you get a true insight into the pure genius behind any invention. Tech-history is best seen in action, not in books. View the Full Article

The Daily Star published an article about Cider Mills in New York and talked to Bill at the Fly Creek Cider Mill.

From the Article: According to Bill Michaels, vice president of family-owned and -operated Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard, the mill staff began pressing apples on Labor Day weekend and will continue to make cider through Thanksgiving. “We produce over 20,000 gallons of cider annually,” Michaels said. “We freeze 5,000 gallons to sample and sell to our spring summer and December visitors as well as our online store, year-round customers.”

Fly Creek Cider Mill, located just a few minutes from Cooperstown, and in its 152nd year, is one of the area’s largest cider producers and a premiere tourist destination. It was purchased by Charles and Barbara Michaels in 1962 and was sold to son Bill and his wife, Brenda Palmer-Michaels, in 1999. Since retaining ownership, the younger Michaelses have added many features including gourmet food, a bakery and even a winery. As a licensed New York State Winery, the mill has developed hard ciders and apple wines. “We are offering these winery beverages as a return to the cider making traditions of the past here at the mill,” Michaels said. New York native, Steve Flesch, who is ranked only 71st this year, plans to win the championship at the Turning Stone Atunyote. The Indian Nation published a news release claiming, while smiling, that the course is “Lucky.” Well, at 71st, it certainly will prove lucky for this New York native since he won over a million dollars, his career best. Atunyote can’t be lucky for everybody, so maybe it will prove lucky for New Yorkers, or who knows. The upcoming event has a six million dollar purse. A lot of money at stake and it happens right here in the Central New York area. I don’t think anybody can argue that this is great for New York, especially Upstate New York. Watch Steve Flesch Video From WKTV – VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) – With less than a day until the Turning Stone Resort Championship, the last minute details are being ironed out.
